The Mystery of Charles Dickens - Simon Callow & Peter Ackroyd

Written by
Read by Simon Callow
Format: MP3

This is Simon Callow’s brilliant, often hilarious, 90-minute one-man show from the early 2000s, interspersing Charles Dickens’ biography with readings (or more accurately performances) of bits of Dickens’ work. The show was written by Peter Ackroyd.

A version of this was produced for BBC Radio 4, but it was just a “straight” reading recorded by Callow in a studio. I much prefer listening to this version, which is the sound from a DVD of a live performance. The words are identical, but hearing it performed to / with an audience gives it a different (and for me much more enjoyable) vibe and energy.

I’ve split it into two tracks, representing either side of the interval.
